How Does Liquid Facelift Work?
Liquid facelift, also known as a liquid face lift, is performed by injecting biostimulatory filler materials into specific points of the face. The products used work through two different mechanisms: some provide immediate volume and support, while others stimulate the skin’s own collagen and elastin production, initiating a long-term renewal process. This dual effect differentiates liquid facelift from classic hyaluronic acid fillers; this is why it is also called biostimulatory or smart filler.
The term “lifting” in the name does not imply cutting and pulling of the skin as in surgical face lifting. The effect occurs at a cellular level: biostimulatory substances enhance collagen structuring in the skin, providing microscopic tightening and firming. Therefore, liquid facelift results appear gradually and it is unrealistic to expect as dramatic a transformation as with surgery.
Difference Between Liquid Facelift and Fillers
The difference between liquid facelift and filler is not only the material used but a completely different approach philosophy. Classic fillers add volume; liquid facelift restructures the skin. The table below summarizes the fundamental differences between the two methods:
Classic HA Filler
Liquid Facelift
Approach
Single area / spot treatment
Holistic, multi-area
Mechanism of Action
Immediate volume
Volume + collagen stimulation
Onset of Effect
Immediate
Immediate + gradual (4-12 weeks)
Duration
6-12 months
12-18 months
Effect on Skin Quality
Limited
Pronounced (tightening, increased elasticity)
Hyaluronic acid filler is a powerful tool for quickly correcting a specific area. Liquid facelift, on the other hand, is planned as a protocol targeting the entire face; due to collagen stimulation, effects increase over months and skin quality improves in the long term.
Liquid Facelift Brands: What Is Each Product Used For?
The question of which brand is the best among liquid facelifts is frequently asked. In reality, there is no single “best” product; each product has a different mechanism of action and different application area. Our clinic uses four different products to offer the most appropriate protocol for each patient's skin condition and expectations.
Radiesse
Radiesse is a well-established biostimulatory filler composed of calcium hydroxyapatite (CaHA) microspheres. Calcium hydroxyapatite is a mineral naturally found in bone and teeth; therefore, it is safely recognized by the body. Radiesse provides immediate volume and structural support, and over time stimulates fibroblast cells to initiate intense collagen production. It delivers strong results in jawline contouring, cheek support, and neck rejuvenation. It is preferred by patients seeking more defined lifting.
HarmonyCa
HarmonyCa is a hybrid biostimulatory filler containing both hyaluronic acid (HA) and calcium hydroxyapatite (CaHA) in a single syringe. The HA component gives the skin immediate hydration, vitality, and slight volume upon application. The CaHA component begins collagen and elastin synthesis in the deeper tissues starting 4-6 weeks after treatment; the effect peaks at 3 months. HarmonyCa is ideal for those seeking a natural and balanced result because it offers liquid face lifting by combining immediate effect with long-term skin renewal.
Novuma
Novuma is also a CaHA-based biostimulatory product but focuses entirely on improving skin quality; it does not provide instant filler effect. Over time, it tightens, thickens, and enhances skin elasticity. It is recommended for patients who want to strengthen skin texture rather than increase volume.
Lenisna
Lenisna combines PDLLA and hyaluronic acid. The HA component provides immediate volume, while PDLLA stimulates collagen production over the long term. It is preferred by patients seeking a balanced and natural result. The procedure is personalized; the choice of which product or product combinations to use is decided together during consultation.
Who Is Suitable for Liquid Facelift?
Liquid facelift can be preferred over a wide age range, from early volume loss and skin laxity starting at age 30 to pronounced sagging at advanced ages 50’. Initiating protective and preventive biostimulation in the 30-40 age group helps to avoid the need for more interventions in later years. In the 40-55 age group, more noticeable sagging, lines, and volume loss on the face are addressed with a more comprehensive protocol.
Ideal candidates are those who do not prefer surgical facelift, have moderate sagging and volume loss, seek natural and gradual rejuvenation, and desire results without downtime. It is not applied during pregnancy, breastfeeding, active skin infection, or autoimmune disease.
How Is Liquid Facelift Performed?
A personalized protocol is prepared after facial analysis during examination. An anesthetic cream is applied to the treatment areas before the procedure. The product is injected with fine needles or cannulas at predetermined points. In addition to the face, it can also be applied to the neck, décolleté, and backs of the hands. The entire procedure lasts 30-45 minutes, and returning to social life on the same day is possible.
Our clinic applies a protocol of 2 sessions spaced 1 months apart. The effect lasts on average 1,5 years after completing two sessions; with a single session, this period decreases to 6-8 months.
Before and After Liquid Facelift
Before the procedure, blood thinners, fish oil, and vitamin E supplements should be discontinued at least 1 weeks prior. Alcohol consumption should be avoided 24 hours beforehand. The procedure is postponed in the presence of active skin infection or herpes.
After liquid facelift, temporary redness, mild swelling, and rarely small bruises may be observed at injection sites; these resolve within 3-7 days. Swelling after liquid facelift can be particularly noticeable in the first 48 hours. During the first week, sauna, steam bath, intense exercise, and excessive sun exposure should be avoided. No pressure or massage should be applied to the treatment area.
How Long Does Liquid Facelift Last?
The duration of liquid facelift varies depending on the product used and the protocol. In our clinic's 2 session protocol, the effect lasts on average 1,5 years. The answer to how many days liquid facelift takes to show effect differs according to the product: HA-containing products show immediate effect; biostimulant effects become evident starting from 4-6 weeks and peak at 3 months. Patience is required for the question of when liquid facelift shows effect; permanent rejuvenation is a gradual process.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are there any risks associated with liquid facelift?
When performed by an experienced physician using the correct technique, it is a safe procedure. Vascular complications can occur if performed by inexperienced hands unfamiliar with vascular anatomy; therefore, it is critically important to have the procedure done by an experienced medical aesthetic physician.
What causes complaints related to liquid facelift?
The majority of complaints and adverse experiences result from incorrect product selection, inappropriate technique, or inexperienced practitioners. Managing expectations is also important; liquid facelift does not provide as dramatic a change as surgery. Satisfaction rates are very high when the procedure is performed on appropriate candidates using the correct technique.
Which areas are treated with liquid facelift?
The primary treatment areas are the face, neck, décolleté, and the backs of the hands. On the face, the cheeks, temples, jawline, and nasolabial folds are commonly treated points. Multiple areas can be addressed in a single session.
What is the difference between facelift and liquid facelift?
Facelift, or surgical face lifting, is a permanent procedure that removes excess skin, requires general anesthesia, and involves weeks of recovery. Liquid facelift, on the other hand, is performed by injection without surgery; social life can be resumed the same day. For advanced sagging, surgery may be more appropriate; the choice between them is determined during examination.
