Sweating is a natural function of the body; however, in some individuals, this mechanism becomes excessive. Constantly wet hands on an ordinary day without any physical activity or temperature increase, sweat marks appearing within minutes under the armpits, avoiding handshakes, or not being able to wear dark colors even in summer — all of these are signs of excessive sweating, known as hyperhidrosis. Sweating botox is one of the most effective medical and non-permanent treatments developed for this condition. Administered at our Kadıköy clinic using approved Dysport and Allergan products, sweating botox provides noticeable relief in a short time.
Hyperhidrosis is an excessive sweating condition caused by overstimulation of the sweat glands by the sympathetic nervous system. It occurs in approximately two to three percent of the population and most cases are primary hyperhidrosis, which is a structural disorder not associated with any underlying disease. The underarms, palms, and soles are the most commonly affected areas; the facial region addressed by facial sweating botox is also among these.
Sweating botox is a medical aesthetic procedure that temporarily suppresses the nerve transmission stimulating sweat glands through botulinum toxin injection. Botulinum toxin blocks the transmission of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine to the sweat gland, significantly reducing sweating in the treated area. It does not disable the general sweating mechanism; it only provides local control in the applied region.
Botulinum toxin temporarily inhibits the release of acetylcholine from nerve endings. Without this chemical signal, sweat glands receive no stimulation and sweating stops. The effect is not permanent; nerve endings gradually regain function, begin releasing acetylcholine again, and sweating slowly returns. This temporary mechanism makes sweating botox both safe and repeatable.
In our clinic, we use botulinum toxin products branded Dysport and Allergan. Both brands have proven safety profiles worldwide in clinical use. The brand and dosage used are determined during the examination according to the patient's complaint and the treatment area.
Botulinum toxin treatment for sweating is most commonly applied to the underarms, palms, and soles; facial sweating can also be addressed within this scope. Each area's anatomical structure, nerve distribution, and application technique differ. The treatment area and dosage are determined during examination by assessing the intensity of sweating and the patient's expectations.
Underarm botulinum toxin treatment for sweating is the most frequently used method in hyperhidrosis management. Since sweat glands are dense in the axillary region, botulinum toxin is highly effective there. Before the procedure, a topical anesthetic cream is applied; then numerous small injections are administered throughout the underarm area with fine needles. The entire procedure is completed in 10-15 minutes, allowing normal daily activities to resume the same day.
The effect typically begins within 4-7 days; full effect is achieved within the first 2 weeks. Underarm sweating botulinum toxin treatment remains effective for 4-6 months. In some patients, regular treatments can extend this duration.
Palmar botulinum toxin treatment is applied for the type of hyperhidrosis that most significantly impacts social and professional life. Avoiding handshakes, difficulty working with a keyboard or paper, and leaving sweat marks when holding a phone are daily manifestations of this problem. Palm botulinum toxin is administered with very fine needles into the palm and finger areas.
The hand area is more sensitive compared to the underarms; therefore, anesthesia is particularly important. In our clinic, patient comfort is enhanced with anesthetic cream and cold application when necessary. Rarely, temporary mild weakness in grip strength may occur after palm injections; this resolves spontaneously within a few weeks and does not leave any permanent effect.
Botulinum toxin treatment for foot sweating is preferred for hyperhidrosis causing excessive sweating and unpleasant odor on the soles. Individuals who have difficulty wearing closed shoes or experience severe sweating after exercise can benefit from this application. Technically, it is similar to the hand procedure and made comfortable with anesthesia.
Facial botulinum toxin treatment is preferred for excessive sweating occurring on the forehead, nose, or upper lip areas. Especially, excessive facial sweating triggered by eating or hot environments (gustatory sweating) is a common use of this treatment. Because the facial area is very close to mimic muscles, dosage and technique must be carefully planned.
Before the procedure, anesthetic cream is applied to the treatment area and approximately 20-30 minutes are waited. For the underarms, an optional starch test can be performed to map the points of highest sweat production. Then, fine needles deliver injections evenly spaced at the determined area. The entire procedure is completed within 10-15 minutes, and patients can return to social and work life the same day.
After the procedure, mild redness and sensitivity may be observed in the treated area for a few hours. Intense exercise, sauna, and steam bath are not recommended for the first 24 hours. The effect begins within 4-7 days and lasts for 4-6 months. The duration of effectiveness can increase with repeated treatments.
When applied with approved products, in the correct dose, and by an experienced physician, sweating botox is a safe treatment. No serious side effects are expected apart from temporary redness and mild sensitivity. Rarely, a transient decrease in grip strength may occur in palm applications; this resolves on its own. It does not disrupt the general sweating mechanism, providing only localized effect in the treated area.
The most common side effects are temporary redness, mild swelling, and rarely small bruises at the injection sites; all of these resolve within a few days. Temporary mild grip weakness may rarely be seen in hand applications. In facial applications, there is a risk of asymmetry if performed with incorrect technique; therefore, selecting an experienced physician is critically important.
The effect generally lasts for 4-6 months. In some patients, the effect after the first application lasts a short period like 3 months, whereas with regular repeat applications this duration can extend up to 6-8 months. When the effect completely wears off, sweating returns to the pre-treatment level; there is no permanent change.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding periods, neuromuscular diseases such as myasthenia gravis, and known allergy to botulinum toxin are absolute contraindications. Patients using blood-thinning drugs, those with active infections, and some chronic diseases are evaluated after examination.
The vast majority of patients receiving botulinum toxin treatment for sweating at our clinic leave very satisfied. The most frequently expressed feedback is “'I had my first comfortable summer' ” and “'I no longer hesitate to shake hands' ”. The quickness of the procedure, lack of recovery time, and noticeable effect are the main reasons for its preference.
